How Many Packs of Hair Extensions Do You Need? A Real Guide by Method

A repeated question our team sees is simple: how much hair do I actually need?

The answer depends on the method and the result you are trying to create. A small amount of hair for added volume or fuller ends is very different from a half-head or full-head transformation, and one “pack” is not the same weight across every extension method.

The guide below gives you Real Hair Co’s starting pack ranges by method. Use it as a planning guide rather than a guaranteed prescription. If you are unsure, our team can help you work through the method and quantity before you order.

Why pack numbers are different between methods

Pack construction matters. Nano Ring, Flat Tip and Micro Tip are 25g strand-by-strand packs. Tape In and Invisible Tape In are 50g packs. Mini Weft and Hand Tied Weft are generally 50g at the shorter lengths and 60g at the longer lengths.

That means “two packs” can represent a very different amount of hair depending on the method. It is more useful to start with the correct method first, then use the pack range for that method.

If you only want volume or fuller ends

You may not need a full-head quantity if your goal is simply to make the ends look fuller or add some extra body.

For Nano Ring, Flat Tip and Micro Tip, the RHC starting guide is 2–3 packs.

For Mini Weft and Hand Tied Weft, the starting guide is also 2–3 packs, but each pack carries more hair than a strand-by-strand pack.

For Tape In and Invisible Tape In, the starting guide is 1–2 packs.

A useful real-world example is Tape In: one 50g Tape In pack contains 20 individual pieces, which form 10 sandwiches when applied as paired tabs. One pack sits within the RHC volume-or-ends range, but it is not the RHC full-head quantity guide.

What does “half head” mean in this guide?

A half-head quantity sits between a small volume boost and a full-head result. RHC’s starting ranges are:

• 3–4 packs for Nano Ring, Flat Tip and Micro Tip
• 3–4 packs for Mini Weft and Hand Tied Weft
• 2–3 packs for Tape In and Invisible Tape In

The exact amount should still be chosen around the client’s natural hair and the result being planned.

What does a full head usually require?

For a full-head starting point, RHC uses:

• 4–6 packs for Nano Ring, Flat Tip and Micro Tip
• 4–6 packs for Mini Weft and Hand Tied Weft
• 3–4 packs for Tape In and Invisible Tape In

These are method-based planning ranges, not a promise that the same quantity will suit every head of hair.

Why we do not give one universal number

Hair-extension quantity is not a one-size-fits-all decision. The method itself changes the pack weight and construction, and the amount needed for a subtle volume result is not the same as the amount needed for a fuller transformation.

That is why we would rather give you a realistic range and help you narrow it down than tell every customer to order the same amount.
